The next SNC3 meeting will be Monday, March 16th, at 3:30p.m. (EUP location to be announced). We will be meeting with Christina Fuller, a representative from the Sexual Violence Victim Advocate Program (SVVA). Christina will present a comprehensive “overview” program which will include a segment on predatory drugs & stress reactions to rape and other forms of sexual violence, in addition to other aspects of the problem. For any nursing student interested in Emergency Nursing or Forensic Nursing this should be an excellent educational opportunity. As always all interested parties are welcome. In this interest of all involved SNC3 members I have decided to not hold meetings on a “regular day and time”. I believe that conducting the meetings at random days and times will hopefully give all group members a chance to attend some of the time. The variablity in your schedules between sophs, juniors and seniors is crazy! So from here on out we will plan meetings about 2-3 weeks in advance.

I am hoping to plan another meeting at the end of February, tenative topic: tracheostomy suctioning and care. Anyone interested in helping me plan this meeting??? I’d love some volunteers.

Kelly M. has arranged for our group to meet with paramedic instructors and paramedic students to observe and practice the following skills: Endotracheal Intubation, IV/med administration, intraosseous infusion access, Cardiac(defibrillation/cardioversion/pacing/rhythm interpretation), and possibly a chest decompression and emergency cricothyrotomy station.

If some of the above skills seem a little intimidating to you, not to worry… you will come away with a greater understanding of them all even if you just participate by observation. Of course you will learn more if you participate and ask questions, but this is an exceptional opportunity for all of you, regardless of your skill level. If you are totally unfamiliar with the above terms, I would take the time to do a little research prior to attendance.

When: 7:30 PM, Thursday, Feb. 5th.

Where: Emergycare – 1701 Sassafrass Street, in Erie (it is in the same plaza as ACL but on the Western side of the building, you can’t miss all the ambulances outside). 

This is a secured building and you will not be able to enter without Kelly so it is important that everyone is on time. Once we get a count, you will receive an email with more specific instructions for parking and which entrance we will be using.

It’s been pretty empty here on the website since break started so I apologize to the many of you who have been checking the website daily. We need some ideas for our next meeting and you can add suggestions here on the website through the comments link at the bottom of this post. I will be providing dates and topics shortly so we can get things rolling again but once again if any of you can think of something for the next meeting please post it below. Since this is such a short post I will leave you with a picture from the last meeting (Hmmm PQRST….) and that Winkebach video that I promised you.

Deep in thought.....

The second meeting for the SNC3 is scheduled for December 9th at 6:00 PM at centennial 132.

We will be covering :

      1) What is PQRST? (Related to EKG’s, not the pain assessment acronym)

      2) 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree Heart Blocks.

I know this is during finals week but hopefully all of you will have enough time to take a quick break from studying for those treacherous finals to join us as it should be a short meeting (most likely less than an hour). We had a really good turnout last meeting during out chest pain simulation and I believe we all learned quite a bit that day as well. Also there will be cookies at the meeting, as if you needed another reason to come out! Hope you all had a good weekend and good luck during finals.
